A Handful of Clay
Book Design, 2021
A Handful of Clay is a children's book I designed, illustrated, and wrote, based on the original story by Henry van Dyke. It’s about how a piece of common clay dreamed to become something beautiful and valuable. It went through a perilous and painful journey, and was disappointed when it was only made to be a common flower pot. However, by the end of the story, it discovers that it was meant to hold a pot of beautiful lilies. The clay finally accepts itself and its value, because although it looks plain and common, it holds a great treasure.
My concept for the design of the book was based on combining traditional aesthetics with modern digital techniques. Furthermore, I utilized textures, warm tones, and hand-drawn illustrations to emphasize the earthy and tactile aspect of the story.
